Cotton Picked

Ole Miss over Texas Tech

Will We Ever Be Good Enough?

Admit it. You’re a Tech fan, and you’ve taken grief for it. People talk trash about your school, your city, your football team, and your football coach. And somewhere underneath those jabs is an implicit insult directed at you, the poor guy who couldn’t get into Texas or A&M, had to inhale cow stench for [...]

Entertainment Retort: June’s Music Picks

Since dabbling around in the live concert scene to some extent has become a hobby of mine after arriving in the Big D, I sometimes stumble across some musical acts that are worth checking out.
June’s Country Pick:  Hayes Carll - A Houston, TX product I’ve enjoyed lately after receiving a recommendation from a friend.  He’s [...]

2006 Recruiting Class Revisted

2006 was that huge 34-commit class coming off a 9-3 season that ended with a Cotton Bowl loss to Alabama. I had super high expectations, and on signing day I was thrilled to count up four 4-star players, four defensive tackles, and at least one 3-star player at every position. Seemed like we [...]

Outdoor Retort: CHUPACABRA IN RICHARDSON, TX!!!

Being the award-winning author of several wildlife mystery publications, I receive copious amounts of email submissions for Outdoor Retort-worthy material.  I’m a man of skepticism and have a top-notch team of trained professionals to help me do the dirty work.  We know how to do our homework around here.  With that in mind, this feature is the [...]

Day 15: Sourdough Bread

This is Day 15 with no TV, although it’s harder to avoid than you think.  I have watched a small amount of TV since my lady folded on Day 2 with the Little House on the Prairie initiative after Nellie Oleson called her ugly in front of the other girls.  She immediately ran back home, [...]

Competing

Our busy season somewhat coincides with the football offseason, which is one of the reasons I love what I do.  However, to the detriment of the Tortilla Retort, my contributions become scarce due to time constraints.  I’ve been traveling some, and we’re on a mission to execute some initiatives that need to be done in [...]

TR All Big 12 Team - Post Spring 2009

Offense
QB Colt McCoy, UT - I’ll give him the nod over Bradford because I think McCoy will be in a little better shape on the OL and at WR.
RB Kendall Hunter, OSU - Losing TE Pettigrew and C Washington will hurt as they were both outstanding players.  He’ll still be alright with tackles Okung and Bond returning along [...]

TR Post Spring Depth Chart: Defense

This list comprises what I thought were the 11 best players by position based on their performance in the R&B Game:
WDE - Rajon Henley/Daniel Howard or Brandon Sharpe
DT - Richard Jones/Victor Hunter/Britton Barbee or Myles Wade
NG - Colby Whitlock/Chris Perry/Myles Wade
SDE - Brandon Sesay/Rajon Henley/Ryan Haliburton
SLB - Bront Bird or Tyrone Sonier/Blake Collier
MLB - Brian [...]

TR Post Spring Depth Chart: Offense

This list comprises what I thought were the 11 best players by position based on their performance in the R&B Game:
QB - Taylor Potts/Steven Sheffield/Stefan Loucks/Seth Doege or Garrett Riley
RB - Baron Batch or Harrison Jeffers/Crawford/Stephens
2RB - Harrison Jeffers
OR - Detron Lewis/Alexander Torres
IR - Tramain Swindall/Austin Zouzalik
IR - Corndog Douglas or Austin Zouzalik
TE - Adam [...]

Post Spring Retort

I was extremely busy the week after the Red & Black Game and had to serve a stint in Paterson, NJ.  I love Paterson, and it’s not just because I get to fly into Newark to get there.  Paterson is an interesting melting pot of diversity, which over the years has served as a landing [...]

Red & Black Game Defense Retort

I’ve passed on several opportunities to half ass this thing, but since that goes against what we believe around here, I’ve delayed to this moment in the sake of content.  Duality is a tricky beast to spring analysis, so keep that in mind. This unit may not possess the stars of the 2008 group, but [...]

The Sweet Smell of Spring: R&B Game - Offense

The glorious Red & Black (or White in this case) Game was upon us.  The buzz intensified the closer I got to the stadium, which was either from the Bloody Mary’s or the atmosphere of fake gameday.  I couldn’t tell for sure.  This was my first spring scrimmage attendance since college and I wasn’t to be disappointed.
Format
Awesome.  Split [...]

Talent Pool Shallowed for Leach in Pirate Attack

For a multitude of reasons, nobody has more Horn of Africa contacts than Scipio Tex at the Barking Carnival.  Read the article here, to get an idea of what hoops one might have to jump through to gain access in the Somalia Pirate Underworld.  Even forced to play 36 holes of golf with a spook in [...]

McKinner Dixon Suspended

Ouch.  Mike Leach has indefinitely suspended DE McKinner Dixon for academic reasons.  There is a growing concern on my end that we will have trouble replacing the productivity of Williams and Dixon.  Maybe I’m just freaking out here.  It’s not like Dixon was one of our best players or anything.

The Boz Stone Cold Saved a Man

Chuck Carlton of the DMN, has nice little blurb about Brian Bosworth performing CPR on what I assume was a choking individual.

Cowboys’ QB Calls Out Roy Williams

Per the DMN, seems as if Aikman is not completely sold on the Cowboys’ trade for WR Roy Williams.  Stating the obvious, can’t say that anyone I know disagrees with him.  The message has been sent by the Sensai, and this is clearly still Aikman’s team.

Real Cowboys’ QBs don’t hang out at crossover concerts.

Outdoor Retort: Visiting the Game Camera

I’ve recently had a series of wildlife photos forwarded to me and a request to get to the bottom of this.  Now, allegedly these photos were taken on a game camera somewhere in South Texas.  There are a pretty wide variety of critters for South Texas, in my opinion, so I’ll just post them and [...]

The Golf Prick

The Masters is upon us and every casual golf exhibitionist in your workplace is the world’s biggest fan of the sport this week.  Hunter, a 2 handicap, has taken the initiative to handle the finances and operations of your company  pool this year.  The first time I ever heard the term “Golf Prick” used was by a former co-worker and [...]

The Half Spring Retort

Multiple sources are spreading rumors like a raging prairie fire of myths that the Tech defense had the upper hand in the team’s initial scrimmage.  Upon first response, that sounds exciting to me.  However, duality seems to rear its ugly head here in some cases.
- Is Taylor Potts not the answer?  Too early to call [...]

Brandon Carter Injury

As most of you know, Brandon Carter went down with an undisclosed knee injury yesterday.   That’s a shame as this short clip of Carter in action at LT is very promising from a footwork perspective.  He also looks much better with 25 less pounds.  Matt Moore seems optimistic.
Hopefully, it’s nothing serious and this may give some [...]
